At the University of Essex, we took a bold, brave and curious approach to increasing engagement during Open Access Week 2018, and created an OA-themed escape room. Most of the articles were concerned with health care professions or science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. This is valuable information, especially in the phase where one is curious about what an escape room is and how such a didactic tool is received by the students. In order to strengthen the reliability and validity of the analysis of articles, the work on the appendix went through two more stages. A few articles used student assessment to validate the tool and, through this approach, to answer the question, Does this work? (Caldas et al., 2019; Clauson et al., 2019).
